Short game

How Can I Stop Trying to Help My Chip Shots Into the Air?

Start with a small chip and a clear place for the club to brush.

Give the club a contact task

If you keep trying to lift your chip shots, give yourself a task that sends the club through the turf on the target side of the ball.

Start small. Can you brush the grass in front without trying to add height with your hands?

Take care of the setup first. Check the ball position and how the hands fit on the club. Make sure you can stand comfortably and move without feeling like you have to reach down for the ball.

Then make a short rehearsal and watch where the club touches the ground.

For a basic chip from a reasonable lie, try moving that brush slightly forward. Put a ball down and attempt the same task.

Use a different sensation and check it

In one lesson, a player’s arms were collapsing and the clubhead was lifting through the strike as he tried to help the ball up. We used short, single-hand work to help him experience the club moving through differently.

The exercise gave him a new sensation. We could then see whether it changed the contact.

At The Tips, we can use TrackMan to check impact location and observe the ball’s flight. Pair that with feedback showing where the club first touches the practice surface.

Keep the target close enough that you can use a small motion. Try producing a lower, predictable chip before adding more height.

If you normally lift hard through the strike, the opposite may feel exaggerated. Check the result before deciding the new motion is too different.

Build options from predictable contact

You can also rehearse a small forward step as the club goes back. That helps some players feel the body contribute while the arms stay softer. Learn the balance without a ball first.

Once contact becomes predictable, move the landing target and explore another club.

The goal is to give you options. Learn to produce a different contact and flight, then use that control to build the chip the situation calls for.
